Rizium materials

Advanced polymers, engineered to perform

Rizium CF and Rizium GF are carbon and glass fiber filled cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) blends. They print on standard FFF printers with a hardened nozzle, need no drying, and are the base polymers for APD.

Rizium CF

Carbon fiber filled

The stiffer grade, with 4.8 GPa flexural modulus and 6.7 GPa tensile modulus, and a black, low-sheen finish with fine layer lines.

Typical uses: jigs, fixtures and tooling, brackets, robot end effectors, drone frames, research fixtures.

Rizium GF

Glass fiber filled

Off-white, with 87 MPa flexural strength and 83 J/m notched impact, and the base material for full-color APD parts, like the wood grain insert above.

Typical uses: end-use parts, lab accessories, enclosures, parts for wet or humid environments.

Values from the Rizium CF and GF technical data sheets, rev 1.2. Mechanical specimens printed on a RIZE One printer with solid infill in the X-Y plane. These are measured values, not guaranteed specifications; results depend on part design, printer and settings. Because of its low density, an 820 g spool holds about the same length of filament as a 1 kg PLA spool.

Chemical resistance

What Rizium withstands

Rated good

Methanol, ethanol, IPA, acetone, MEK, dilute and concentrated hydrochloric acid, 10% sulfuric acid, nitric acid, phosphoric acid, 10% acetic and formic acid, 50% caustic soda, 10% ammonia, 30% hydrogen peroxide, 40% formaldehyde, ethylene oxide, DMSO and DMF.

Rated poor

Hydrocarbons (pentane, hexane, toluene, xylene, oils and fuels), ethers and THF, cyclohexanone, limonene, concentrated sulfuric acid and 1,2-dichloroethane.

Ratings from the chemical resistance table in the technical data sheets. Exposure time and temperature are not specified, so test parts in their actual service conditions.

Limits

Where Rizium is not the right choice

  • Oils and fuels. Poor resistance to hydrocarbons makes Rizium a weak fit for automotive parts.
  • Heat. Heat deflection temperature is 73 °C for CF and 75 °C for GF.
  • Unsupported overhangs. Rizium does not bridge well. Support bridges and overhangs, ideally with Rizium Support on a dual extruder printer.

* Depends on the hotend; measured on a Bambu Lab X1C. Support all bridges and overhangs steeper than the threshold for a good surface. Avoid feed paths with tight tube bends, and use multi-material systems only if they are rated for fiber filled filament. Keep spools in their bag when not in use; shelf life is one year.

Rizium Support

Breakaway supports for dual extruder printers

Rizium Support is a support filament made to pair with Rizium CF and GF. Print the part from one nozzle and the supports in Rizium Support from the other, with zero interface distance. The supports snap away by hand and leave smooth, clean undersides on overhangs and bridges.

In use

A custom CMM inspection fixture in Rizium CF

Prymetech, a metrology and quality control engineering firm, needed a fixture to cradle a heavy metal part with complex geometry during coordinate measuring machine inspection. PLA, PETG and ABS were not strong enough for the load, and machining the shape would have meant long lead times and a lot of waste. Prymetech printed the fixture base in Rizium CF on an XRIZE APD system, with release ink at the supports, and assembled it with standard modular fixturing components.

Questions

Rizium in short

Do Rizium filaments need drying?

No. Rizium CF and GF absorb less than 0.01% moisture, so they print straight from the bag. Store the spool in its bag between prints.

Which printers can run Rizium?

Any FFF printer for 1.75 mm filament with a hardened steel or wear resistant nozzle and hardened drive gears. No enclosure is needed. Avoid feed paths with tight tube bends, and use multi-material systems only if they are rated for fiber filled filament.

What is the difference between Rizium CF and Rizium GF?

Rizium CF is filled with carbon fiber and is the stiffer grade, with 4.8 GPa flexural modulus against 2.9 GPa for GF. Rizium GF is filled with glass fiber, is off-white, and is the base material for full-color APD parts.

What is Rizium not suited for?

Parts exposed to oils, fuels and other hydrocarbons, and parts that run hot: the heat deflection temperature is 73 °C for CF and 75 °C for GF.

Where can I buy Rizium?

Rizium CF, Rizium GF and Rizium Support are sold through the Niche 3D Store at niche3d.store. For samples or material for development work, contact Palitra.
